It was founded in 1974 at the request of the Čilipi Tourism Association for the purpose of presenting additional deals and packages during the Sunday folklore performances. The house in which the museum is located in the middle of Čilipi was built in 1909 for the requirements of the rural savings society and cultural club. Prior to the Homeland War of 1991, the museum was furbished as a typical Konavle house with exhibits of men’s and women’s national dress and embroidery. The museum items were provided voluntary by the inhabitants and through purchases under the professional guidance and effort of Katica Benc Bošković.
During the Homeland War, the building was burnt to the ground, and part of the museum fund was irreparably destroyed. The museum items continually exhibited today have survived thanks to the evacuation and storing of the specimens at the museum cistern.
Since 1998, the Konavle County Museum has operated under the Konavle Museums and Galleries.
The continual exhibits at the museum also present the women’s and men’s national dress of Konavle from various periods, other textile handcrafts such as jewellery, musical instruments, artistic paintings, photographs and various other useful items. Besides the ethnographic collection, the Konavle Heritage Museum also exhibits artefacts of the Cavtat Embroidery Association which operated in Cavtat until the Second World War under the guidance of Jelka Miš. The collection has exceptional value in terms of the embroidery specimens from our and neighbouring countries which Jelka Miš had collected throughout her life.
Presenting and interpreting all forms of the ethnographic heritage by way of exhibitions, publications, giving talks, educational programs and multimedia content enables the Konavle County Museum to promote an understanding of local cultural heritage. The inclusion of local inhabitants in the museum’s activities is an endeavor to invigorate heritage memories and transfer them to future generations.
