Epidaur – Rat, Cavtat

Epidaur or Epidaurum was an ancient Roman colony built on the basis of an Iron Age Illyrian settlement. Due to its favourable economic and commercial position Epidaur grew into a strong port and economical centre. According to the first written sources Epidaur is mentioned in the 47 BC in battle between Caesar and Pompey. A few decades later, at the time of Augustus Epidaur is already a colony. It is assumed that the city had a proper street layout, well organized communal infrastructure, administrative, economic and religious facilities. Epidaur also had a 24 km long aqueduct that went from today's village Vodovađa to Cavtat, former Epidaur. Today, on the peninsula Rat one can still see the remains of the villa rustica, while the remains of the street layout are seen in today's formation of streets in old centre of Cavtat.
