On Thursday, February 10, in House Bukovac, a lecture on painting Carnival in Epidaurum was held. Senior curator Helena Puhara presented to the visitors the circumstances of the creation of the painting itself, which is today kept in the Baltazar Bogišić Collection, in Cavtat.
Visitors were informed about how the Carnival in Epidaurum was painted by Vlaho Bukovac in 1901, during his four-year-long stay in Cavtat, as well as about what events preceded that stay. In addition to historical and artistic acquaintance with this large canvas depicting 70 locals from Cavtat, Puhara presented Bukovac’s contemporaries during the carnival party, as well as political and cultural aspects of Cavtat during those times that we know about thanks to the numerous letters held in House Bukovac archive. Visitors had the opportunity to listen to a lot of hidden clues from the painting, but also saw some sketches and drawings which Bukovac made specifically for this painting. Those drawings are kept today in the collection of House Bukovac and testify to Bukovac’s extraordinary drawing skills.
