On the occasion of marking 2022 as the 100th anniversary of the death of Vlaho Bukovac, on Thursday, March 3, 2022, at 5 PM, a thematic lecture "Vlaho Bukovac and religious art" was held. Curator Jelena Beželj reminded the visitors that in his rich oeuvre, Vlaho Bukovac also made around 20 exceptional works of religious art, most of which are now located in Cavtat. Thus, among other arts, in the church of St. Nicholas in Cavtat, we can find atypical Bukovac’s art such as the banner of St. Nicholas, measuring 430 x 325 cm, or diorama of Christ’s tomb, made of 5 free-standing scenes. Today, the diorama is exhibited in the church during the Holy Week, and as Bukovac himself wrote in his autobiography My Life: It was something completely new! In the Franciscan Church of Our Lady of the Snow, among other arts, a monumental painting of Our Lady of Cavtat is displayed. While, in the House Bukovac, his early religious works are preserved, such as Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows. This specific work was Bukovac’s first work of art, and he made it when he was only 10 years old. In addition to the famous religious works, curator Jelena Beželj also presented some lesser-known drawings and correspondence among his clients, which testify to the process of creating paintings, but also their reception among the local people. Drawings and correspondences are today stored in the collections of the House Bukovac.
