Mythological themes in the works of Vlaho Bukovac

On Thursday, March 17, a lecture on Allegorical and mythological themes in the paintings of Vlaho Bukovac was held at the House Bukovac. Museum pedagogue Maris Stanović presented Bukovac’s works as well as accompanying documentation from all phases of his life work that are currently held at the House Bukovac. From Bukovac’s earliest painterly attempts, he was fascinated by the ancient pantheon, but also by the general ancient culture and art, which were most often his source of iconographic themes and motifs. Whether it was a depiction of the ancient ambiance of the Arcadian atmosphere of a specific historical theme or his interpretation of abstractions or phenomena such as the Allegory of Painting or the Double Coronation in Heaven and Earth that was made for the Theatre in Dubrovnik. The development of Bukovac's painting style, which has changed following frequent and numerous changes of residence in the world and European capitals, was also noticeable in the presented works. In them, Bukovac absorbed current trends in art, combining them with his academic education, which followed the ancient genre. This inexhaustible mythological theme in art was just a small part of Bukovac's rich opus. Today, valuable and meaningful part of the House Bukovac, i.e. the pride of his birthplace.
