The creation of this new image of national identity was presented through archival material, sketches, and photographs. Scenes depicting the cultural and literary past of Croats through the characters of the Illyrians, in this case, the bearers of the Croatian national revival, who worship the old Dubrovnik poetry personified through the figure of Ivan Gundulić. The choice of characters that were presented in the picture was chosen by Milivoj Šrepel, while Vlaho Bukovac, together with Stjepan Miletić and Ksaver Šandor Gjalski, were actively involved in creating a display of historically staged utopian vision. The curtain was designed to revive the dormant country in the struggle for autonomy, artistic progress, and above all, the strengthening of national identity.
