Konavle women through the brush of Vlaho Bukovac

On Thursday, April 7, at the House Bukovac a lecture on Konavle women through the brush of Vlaho Bukovac, was held. Among several of Bukovac’s ethnographic works, paintings with Konavle motifs have found their place. These are most often portraits or depictions of outdoor figures in the traditional Konavle garment, as the most prominent indicator of the identity of the Konavle region. Although a sparsely represented theme within Bukovac’s oeuvre, it nevertheless allows us to follow Bukovac’s painting achievements and the development of his visual language, starting with the first depictions from San Francisco, via Paris and Cavtat, all the way to the last years in Prague. Whether Bukovac depicts Konavle women academically or realistically; in the spirit of Plein air and impressionism; as portraits, genre scenes, or allegorical depictions; these paintings contain, in addition to artistic value, undeniable documentary-ethnographic value significant for his homeland.

Museums and galleries of Konavle consist of the:

Konavle County Museum, House Bukovac, Department of Archaeology and Račić Mausoleum.
