Bukovac at the Paris Salon

On Thursday, May 19, at 5 PM in the House Bukovac, museum pedagogue Maris Stanović held a lecture Bukovac at the Paris Salon. The Paris Salon, as the most prestigious art event and fashionable meeting at that time, attracted a huge number of artists, critics, art dealers, and the interested public. While jury had an extremely difficult job to choose only 2 000 paintings among around 8 000 of them. During his seventeen-year-long stay in Paris, Vlaho Bukovac regularly exhibited at the Paris Salon, making his debut in 1878, as a student at the Académie des Beaux-Arts. His painting became more prominent in 1882 when he exhibited the painting La Grande Iza. Until 1893, Bukovac was present at the Salon, exhibiting thematically diverse works: from ethnographic genre scenes, academic allegorical and mythological acts, biblical paintings to numerous portraits. He exhibited in a large competition of French and foreign artists, but according to the concept and artistic expression, his works were above average, among exhibitors. These paintings, which were at the same time harmoniously adapted to the taste of the audience and the critics, brought him fame, i.e. the dream of every Salon exhibitor.
