Early works of Vlaho Bukovac

Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the death of Vlaho Bukovac, on Thursday, September 29, a lecture Early works of Vlaho Bukovac was held at the House Bukovac. Through the presentation, museum pedagogue Maris Stanović contextualized amateur creativity within the turbulent, life circumstances that young Vlaho Bukovac went through. The path of maturing and understanding painting as a life calling will be traced through his boyhood works from Cavtat, works created during his short career as a sailor, wall paintings in his birthplace, and finally works from America, where for the first time we can talk about certain painterly achievements. The number of preserved works from the period before he started Art school in Paris in 1877 is small, but the available documentation and autobiography as a source, provide an exceptional insight into the self-taught development of the artist’s talent. The will and perseverance, but above all the inner call to become a painter and constantly improve, which will culminate during his stay in San Francisco, will make Bukovac recognize his path, which he will follow throughout his entire life.
