On Thursday, October 27 at 6 PM, museum pedagogue Maris Stanović held a lecture on Vlaho Bukovac’s stay in Split during the late 19th century. During his stay in Paris, Bukovac regularly visited his homeland, but only once did his respite from Paris last longer. From the fall of 1884 to the end of the summer of 1885, Bukovac retreated to Dalmatia. Primarily to clear up his personal artistic dilemmas. With shorter stays in Zadar, Korčula, Dubrovnik, and Cavtat, he spent most of his time in Split. That stay is considered one of the most significant events in the artistic life of Split in the 19th century. During that period, Bukovac painted about a hundred portraits while actively participating in Split's social life, dealing with both artistic and national issues. He crowned his rich activity in Split with a large exhibition in the old Realka house exhibiting portraits of Split residents of all ages and social statuses. This was the first art manifestation in Split, accompanied by considerable publicity and approval.
