On Saturday, October 23 at 7 pm an exhibition Bukovac from the dark chamber was opened in the Bukovac House.
At the opening ceremony, the gathered were greeted by the director of the Museum and Galleries of Konavle, Antonia Rusković Radonić. The director presented the difficult, pandemic-related circumstances in which the exhibition was realized and emphasized that this exhibition is a great success for the Museum and Galleries of Konavle. She also commented on the importance of cooperation between the local community and the museum on the example of an old camera once belonging to Vlaho Bukovac, and today exhibited at the exhibition, which arrived at the Bukovac House through the kindness of individuals. Senior curator and author of the exhibition Helena Puhara briefly presented the exhibition, which was then officially opened by Mayor Božo Lasić.
The exhibition presents photographs from the Collection of the Bukovac House, which thematizes Bukovac's life and work. Apart from being an object of photography, during his stay in San Francisco Vlaho Bukovac mastered the technique of photography while working in a photography studio. From the very beginning, Bukovac used photography as an auxiliary technical tool in his work and made portraits that had their template in photography. On this occasion, 80 photographs from different narratives of this rich collection of the Bukovac House are exhibited. They are of various provenances, from domestic, Dalmatian, and Zagreb photography studios to European and American ones. They have a distinct value, both documentary and artistic, while some of them are of high artistic and technical achievements. Those ones are of inestimable importance and unavoidable for a broader view of Bukovac’s opus.
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalog that presents Bukovac's work in photography.
The exhibition can be visited until the end of 2021.
