Lecture - Epidaurus – archaeological site on Peninsula Rat, Cavtat

Archaeological site with remains of architectural complex from Antiquity is located on the far western part of the Peninsula Rat in Cavtat. The architectural complex was adapted to a morphology of a steep terrain, slowly descending towards the sea level. Previous excavations have confirmed seven rooms sequentially positioned in the north-south direction. In the excavations conducted between 2014 and 2016, on the south-western edge of the complex, original in situ fresco decoration was found.

The excavation area is part of the Colony Epidaurus, which, according to the rare archaeological excavations had all the characteristics of a Roman urbanism: proper street raster, well-maintained communal infrastructure, administrative, economic and religious facilities.

Thanks to its favourable position between the two important trading posts, Narona and Risinium, as well as the fertile hinterland and the coastal configuration of the terrain, in the times of Antiquity Epidaurus developed into an important port and economic centre.

On Friday, 7th of December 2018 at the Department of archaeology (St Blaise Franciscan monastery, Pridvorje) curator and archaeologist Helena Puhara presented the history of the site, it’s past and recent researches.
