On Friday, 9th of November 2018 in Department of archaeology (St Blaise Franciscan monastery, Pridvorje) Museums and galleries of Konavle organized a lecture about Lokrum Benedictine abbey. The presenter was Eva Žile from archaeological firm Arheo plan d.o.o., contractor of archaeological excavations.
On the island of Lokrum in the first half of the 11th century was founded the most important Benedictine Abbey of the Dubrovnik area. It is believed that the first Benedictine building was erected in the pre-Romanesque order, followed by the Romanesque phase in which a new church and monastery were built. At the end of the Middle Ages, around the 15th and early 16th centuries, a new monastery was built next to the existing one.
Along with the historical context, existing literature and detailed stylistic analysis, results from the archaeological excavations are helping in creating a more complete picture of the monastery. However, many questions about the building heritage of the Lokrum Benedictines still remain open. Among the most burning ones is the location of the original, first church.
