On the remains of old Epidaurum

On Monday, December 20, 2021, at the Department of Archaeology of Museums and Galleries of Konavle, an exhibition On the remains of old Epidaurum was opened. The opening was held as part of the public event Fragments of Epidaurum and Tastes of Antiquity.

The remains of old ‘Epidaurum’ are worth observing – wrote I. Kunčević, a member of the Dubrovnik branch of the Croatian Antiquarian Society on July 15, 1929, proposed that all known finds of ancient Epidaurum be united on one topographic map. Therefore, the goal of this exhibition was to present the wider area of Cavtat with all the previous research about Epidaurum, on the one, unique map. The map will be available online to enable a more sensitized attitude of the community towards this historical, ancient area. On the exhibition, objects and fragmented archaeological finds from previous research conducted in Cavtat, which are part of the Department of Archaeology, were interpreted in the context of Epidaurum’s connection with important centers of ceramics, glass, and food production throughout the Roman Empire.

Curators Jelena Beželj and Helena Puhara spoke about the exhibition and online platform. While the director of Museums and Galleries of Konavle, Antonia Rusković Radonić gave an introductory speech on the importance of archaeological heritage in the context of creating a broader picture of our exceptional and rich identity. The exhibition was opened by Ivo Mujo from the Agrotourism Konavle Association, who presented ancient cuisine and Roman snacks, prepared as part of the Christmas Fragrance event in Konavle. Ante Tonći Đurković embodied Quintus Marcius, a native of Epidaurum and praetorian prefect in the time of Emperor Hadrian (117 AD – 138 AD). The accompanying program, along with a Roman table prepared by members of the Agrotourism Konavle Association, was spiced up by a musical interpretation of Roman times, performed by the young flutist Barbara Ćorak. The composition Sounds of Antiquity, composed by Nena Ćorak, was also premiered.

The authors of the exhibition are Helena Puhara and Jelena Beželj. While Sanja Pujo and Helena Puhara were responsible for the exhibition design. The author of the online platform is Jelena Beželj. The platform was made in cooperation with the Link2 company from Zagreb, and you can check it out at the link: https://epidaur.migk.hr/en/
