During the European Heritage Days, on Wednesday, October 19, at 6 PM in the Department of Archaeology the presentation of the newly made web platform about ancient Epidaurum was held.
Cavtat is situated at the basis of ancient Epidaurum, a Roman colony first mentioned in 48 BC. In ancient Rome, the status of a colony represented the highest status that a provincial city could obtain. Almost every colony was a copy of the city of Rome, so it can be assumed that Epidaurum was no exception. Each city had a forum or main square located at the intersection of the main streets of cardo and decumanus. Next to the forum were administrative buildings and temples, and a regular network of streets branched out around it, along which the city’s apartment blocks stretched. Among other things, the cities had a theatre, thermal baths, and other public buildings that we do not know where they were in Epidaurum because we have not yet found them in Cavtat. Thus, this digital map is the first step in figuring out the borders of ancient Epidaurum.
The web platform was presented by the curator of the Museums and Galleries of Konavle and at the same time the author of the platform Jelena Beželj. At the end of the presentation, Beželj mentioned that even now, half a year after its creation, new findings have emerged in Cavtat. New findings that will be implemented on this web in near future, and we sincerely hope that there will be even more new discoveries in the coming years.
